A "Break Bread, Break Silence" Event Focusing on the Opioid Crisis

Break Bread, Break Silence is a community healing-focused dinner and documentary experience designed to spark meaningful conversation, reduce stigma, and connect Delaware communities to real solutions around substance use and overdose. This three-part format—film, food, and facilitated conversation—creates a safe and engaging environment for participants to reflect, share, and explore solutions to the substance use and overdose crisis in a culturally responsive and community-centered way.

Hosted by 100 Black Men of Delaware and supported by Feel the Future, Community Health Coaching & Consulting LLC, this event features a screening of the 45-minute version of Silence on the Streets, a documentary that brings to light the lived experiences of inner-city communities and predominantly marginalized populations impacted by the past and present illicit opioid crisis.

Following the film, guests will enjoy a light meal and participate in guided table discussions led by David Hannah and Sharece Sellem-Hannah, who use their lived experience and professional expertise to facilitate honest reflection and action-oriented dialogue.

Continuing the Work of Breaking Silence on the Streets

This event builds upon the important momentum of last year’s Silence on the Streets Screenings & Unity Dinner Tour, where we hosted screenings and community dinners in seven locations across Delaware. Those gatherings gave voice to lived experiences, sparked important conversations, and reminded us that healing begins with listening, sharing, and breaking silence together.

The initiative was originally led by Delaware’s Behavioral Health Consortium under Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long, in collaboration with Black Faces & Black Voices of Recovery (Phillip Rutherford). Their leadership and commitment laid the foundation for meaningful dialogue that continues today. Inspired by this format, we are fortunate to support 100 Black Men of Delaware as they take the lead on such an important issue for our state.

Presented by 100 Black Men of Delaware and Feel the Future LLC, featuring Dr. Keith Pettiford, Rev. Dr. Carol Boggerty, and "Silence on the Streets" created by NE-HIDTA, ORS-CT and Sharece Sellem-Hannah, this event creates a safe space to reflect, connect, and take meaningful steps toward change.

Quick recap: Our 2024 Silence on the Streets & Unity Dinner Tour brought communities together in:

  • Wilmington: DeTV & Strong Tower Outreach Ministries

  • Newark: Cinema 5 Movies & University of Delaware

  • Dover: The WELL Church

  • Middletown: Living Grace Cathedral

  • Seaford: Adult & Teen Challenge

Each stop represented a powerful moment of connection, breaking bread and breaking silence with diverse communities across the state.

Why This Matters

Our mission is rooted in community health, education, and connection. This upcoming event reflects that mission by providing space to:

  • Break Bread – Share a meal that brings us together.

  • Break Silence – Create space for voices often left unheard to tell their truths.
